Redmaids’ is the oldest girls School in the country founded in 1634 by John Witson a wealthy Merchant and Lord Mayor of Bristol. John Whitson outlived all three of his daughters and chose to leave his estate for the foundation of; The Red Maids Hospital, created for 40 poor girls who would be ‘apparelled in red’ – a cloth he manufactured. Now the School has grown to 500 students on the site which is situated approximately 100m form Ferndale Mews, just a few moments walk.
